Alcohol and marijuana may be legal. That doesn’t mean they’re harmless.

Why this matters to us

We know the toll that alcohol and marijuana use can take on our families and our community. A substance can be legal to acquire and use. It can be socially acceptable. And when taken in moderation, it may be perfectly harmless. Except when it’s not.

Alcohol use disorder and excessive marijuana use can be just as devastating as other, illegal, drug use. By connecting in with and leaning on each other and our community as a whole, we can weave a strong fabric of support to lift our loved ones out of disordered use and into a bright, joyful future.

Facts & Overview

Alcohol and marijuana have long been used as tools of oppression in Native communities, impacting our health, families, and cultures. And on the other hand, many people are able to use these legal substances responsibly.  It’s not the use of these substances itself, but their misuse, that leads to harm. Our hope is that community members will feel in control of their decisions, and we’re here when you’re ready to quit.

Tulalip’s Chemical Dependency Program offers culturally informed care and support for those navigating alcohol or marijuana misuse. Resources like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Marijuana Anonymous (MA) provide structured, peer-driven recovery, and there are also AA meetings in the surrounding area for additional community support.

Reclaiming our strength means healing from the cycles of harm while supporting a healthier future for ourselves and future generations. If you’re ready to take that step, support is here for you.

How Does Tulalip Approach Addiction?

Both alcohol and marijuana can have significant impacts on mental and physical health. While they are often normalized socially, addiction and dependency can cause challenges for individuals and families. At Tulalip, we focus on healing through a mix of cultural traditions and evidence-based practices.

Whether you’re seeking support for yourself or someone you care about, Tulalip offers confidential services that include counseling, peer support, and access to culturally relevant recovery programs.

Healing from addiction isn’t just about quitting a substance—it’s about reconnecting with self, family, and culture. Tulalip integrates traditional practices with evidence-based treatments to support holistic wellness.

Now there is no one who could catch up with us.

There is something you can do.
Strong community connections are key to addressing this crisis. When neighbors and local groups unite, they create a support network that can identify and help those at risk. Small acts—checking in, sharing resources, offering support—make a real difference. These connections don’t just help in emergencies; they build resilience and prevent addiction from taking root.
